The Cactus Garden

(also on the Gardening Blog)

To the south of the Pond Garden is a grove of seven pinion pines and a Colorado juniper with various cactus plants planted around them. Most of the plants were planted by cuttings and are just now getting larger.

The garden was started with inspiration from the Santa Fe based Cactus Rescue Project. The Cactus Rescue Project was the idea and inspiration of John “Obie” Oberhausen (Unfortunately "Obie" passed away on December 24, 2022) and Joe Newman.

"Obie"

They began by collecting cuttings from the neglected and dying Santa Fe Cholla colony in downtown Santa Fe and propagating them in their yards. The Eldorado in Santa Fe subdivision has benefitted by their asssistance and enthusiasm over the years. The cactus gardens at the Community Center and the La Tienda Shopping Center are worthwhile to visit.

In my garden there are five Santa Fe cholla. The Santa Fe cholla are special in that they are now only found growing wild in Fort Marcy Park in Santa Fe, Pojoaque and Chimayo, NM.
